R4,000 | Secondhand, barely used (approx. 50 grinds) | Excellent condition
The short version
The Baratza Encore is one of the most respected entry-level burr grinders in the world of specialty coffee — the grinder most coffee professionals recommend as the first “real” upgrade for anyone serious about their filter coffee, pour-over, or French press at home. This one is in black, has been used roughly 50 times since new, and is in excellent condition — basically a like-new grinder at a fraction of retail.
New to coffee grinders? Here’s why this one matters
Burr grinders vs. blade grinders. Cheap coffee grinders use a spinning blade that chops beans into random-sized fragments — some fine, some coarse, all in the same batch. That inconsistency is one of the biggest reasons home coffee tastes worse than café coffee: uneven particles extract unevenly, giving you a cup that’s simultaneously over-extracted (bitter) and under-extracted (sour). A burr grinder like the Encore crushes beans between two precisely spaced surfaces, producing uniform particle sizes. Uniform grounds extract evenly, which is the single biggest lever for better-tasting coffee at home — bigger than the beans, the water, or the brewing method.
Why the Encore specifically. It uses 40mm conical burrs (manufactured in Europe to commercial-grade tolerances) spun by a high-torque motor at a low 450 RPM. That low speed matters: faster, cheaper grinders generate heat and static that can affect flavour and make grounds clump and fly everywhere. The Encore’s slower grind keeps things cool, clean, and consistent.
Important note: this is not an espresso grinder. There are two versions of this grinder — the standard Encore (this one) and the Encore ESP. The standard Encore has a grind range of roughly 250–1200 microns across 40 settings, which comfortably covers drip coffee, pour-over, AeroPress, and French press — but doesn’t grind fine enough for proper espresso. If you want espresso, look for the Encore ESP, which uses different burrs tuned for that finer range. This listing is for the standard Encore, ideal for anyone brewing filter-style coffee at home.
